Fight the trap!
Once upon a time, there was a princess who was like a size four or something. She could eat and drink whatever she wanted and always stayed really skinnny and had flat, firm abs even though she never went to the gym.
Every time she tried on jeans, the very first pair fit perfectly and made her look amazing. She lived in a great big, beautiful casle with her handsome, multimillionaire husband, who was busy all the time buying her giant diamonds, taking her to Hawaii, giving her foot massages, and telling her how beautiful she was.
One day, she was eaten by a dragon and no one cared.
The End.
I got a card with that “fairy tale” for my birthday. What a hoot! But there is also a much deeper message buried in the joke.
The same message was told in a story by the speaker at my college graduation:
No matter how rich you are, no matter how famous you get, or how good looking you may be, on the day you die if it’s raining no one is coming to your funeral.
And that, in a nutshell, is why this life will pale in comparison to the next.
Why do we keep reaching for earthly goals, goals set by mankind? These things we long for are not what we really NEED. We eschew Bible study to watch the latest episode of our “can’t miss it” television show. We turn our backs on our prayer life because we have to get to the mall and hit the sale, to get this season’s hot look.
And perhaps worst of all: We look in the mirror and despise what we see, and spend dollar upon dollar and hour upon hour attempting to change ourselves into some arbitrary idea of beautiful.
Yet, to God, we are ALL beautiful. In God, we have EVERYTHING that we need. Oh, not everything we want. That list just keeps getting longer, doesn’t it? But we have absolutely everything we need when we can rest in the arms of a risen saviour.
In reality, it is all a trap… a trap set by Satan to turn our eyes away from God and focus on ourselves. And when we focus on ourselves, we can never be truly happy, because we seek a perfection that can’t be had… perfection in the eyes of man.
Today, try to focus on God. If you find yourself getting caught up in the world’s vision of life, say a prayer and backtrack, try to refocus. It ain’t easy, but when your vision of the world is seen through God’s eyes, you will be amazed at what you see!
