Homework!

33 Teach me, O LORD, to follow your decrees;
then I will keep them to the end.34 Give me understanding, and I will keep your law
and obey it with all my heart.35 Direct me in the path of your commands,
for there I find delight.36 Turn my heart toward your statutes
and not toward selfish gain.37 Turn my eyes away from worthless things;
preserve my life according to your word. [a]38 Fulfill your promise to your servant,
so that you may be feared.39 Take away the disgrace I dread,
for your laws are good.40 How I long for your precepts!
Preserve my life in your righteousness.Psalms 119: 33-40
What is God teaching you this week?
We try to teach our children that there is so much to be learned in everything that we do, whether it is school, on the playground, at church. But sometimes we forget that God uses teaching moments, too. In fact, one can argue that in virtually every moment of each day we can learn something from God, if we will only open our hearts up and hear Him.
Which brings me back to the point: What is God teaching you? As I look at my own week so far, there are dozens of lessons that He is trying to teach me, but I will admit that I have been cutting class on some of those lessons! Right now, He is trying to teach me patience and understanding.
Let’s just say I am flunking the course at this point, but I’m still hoping that He grades on the curve!
The best way to open your heart to God’s lessons is to open your Bible, spend time in the word, and combine that with spending time alone with God through prayer and quiet. Reflect. Look back over your day. Be honest with yourself, and with Him (after all, He already knows what happened,what’s going to happen, and how you feel about it!).
Only after study and reflection will God’s lessons become more clear.
Now, that doesn’t mean once the lesson is learned that it is mastered. As I said, I am still in the learning curve on this whole patience thing, and I’m in about, oh, my third or fourth decade of studying the subject.
But we can’t learn the lesson if we don’t follow the lesson plan, and study the course material.
Guess it’s time to do a little homework!
