Secret sins

I’m on a diet.
Now these words won’t elicit any shock from those who know me. You see, I have been on a diet since, hmm, let’s see… around 1978.
Summer, I believe.
I have had major successes, usually followed by creeping failures that start to add up. But two weeks ago I decided to hit it hard. Work outs. Better eating. The whole enchilada, no pun intended.
Yet, two weeks later I haven’t lost a pound. Or an ounce. Or, well, anything.
I looked at my food diary. Nothing bad. What was up?
Then my dear, sweet, mean-spirited (just kidding) husband pointed out that not everything that made it into my tummy actually made it into my food diary.
“What about the fries that you ate last night?” he asked.
“Those don’t count, they were our daughter’s. I was just finishing up her dinner.” Plausible defense on my part.
“You had a cookie at the dance studio,” he continued.
As he went on (and on and on and on) I started to see a pattern. I was writing down what I ate at meals, but not all the little things. And that was what was adding up and keeping me from reaching my goal.
We tend to be like that with sin. If no one sees it, it just doesn’t count. If we are driving down the road and utter a profanity when a car cuts us off, that doesn’t really count, right? I mean, no one heard it.
Kind of like the age-old question: If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?
Only for a sneaky sinner (guilty!), we say: If I sin, and no one sees it, is it really a sin?
Only one problem there… Guess who does see it? Guess who does see into the darkest corners of our minds and souls.
So we can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but we can’t fool God.
Ever.
But the story (and awful analogies) don’t end there. You see, God sees all, knows all, loves all, and forgives all.
So, while we may think we have our little secrets, it is no secret to God. And it is no secret what God can do. Because, as the old hymn says, what He’s done for others He will do for you.
